Tommy Lynn Sells: The "Coast-to-Coast Killer"

Overview

Tommy Lynn Sells was an American serial killer and drifter whose violent criminal history extended across several states. Born on June 28, 1964, in Oakland, California, Sells spent much of his adult life moving from one community to another, frequently traveling by bus, freight train or on foot. This mobility made it extremely difficult for investigators to reconstruct his movements and determine the full extent of his crimes. Sells claimed responsibility for as many as 70 murders committed between the late 1970s and the end of 1999. However, many of his statements could not be independently verified, and investigators discovered inconsistencies in some of his confessions. He was ultimately convicted of two murders in Texas: the killing of 13-year-old Kaylene "Katy" Harris and the abduction and murder of 9-year-old Mary Beatrice Perez. According to his later statements, Sells frequently entered homes through unlocked doors or windows and attacked people he encountered by chance. He did not follow one consistent pattern. His reported victims included women, men and children, and the crimes attributed to him involved stabbing, strangulation, shooting and blunt-force attacks. This lack of a single victim profile or method complicated efforts to connect cases occurring hundreds or thousands of miles apart. ...
