On a sweltering summer day in the Midwest, a tragic discovery unfolded that would haunt the St. Louis, Missouri, area for decades. On July 31, 1983, 33-year-old Colleen Gill and her four-year-old daughter, Tiffany, were found dead inside their home on Washington Terrace in the West End neighborhood. The Caucasian victims had been subjected to a brutal attack, having been beaten to death with a blunt instrument, believed to be a baseball bat or similar weapon.
The sheer violence of the crime scene shocked investigators and instilled fear throughout the community, where the family was well-known for owning a hair salon in the nearby suburb of Des Peres.
Initial investigations struggled to identify a perpetrator, though scrutiny briefly fell upon Colleen's husband, Thomas Gill. Detectives considered him a person of interest in the immediate aftermath of the double homicide, yet no physical evidence linked him to the crime. He maintained his innocence, was never formally arrested or charged in connection with the deaths of his wife and daughter, and the case eventually grew cold as leads evaporated. For years, the killings remained a painful unsolved mystery for the surviving family members and the region.
Decades later, a breakthrough occurred when law enforcement connected the murders to Tommy Lynn Sells, a transient serial killer known as the Coast to Coast Killer. Witnesses from 1983 had reported seeing a man matching Sells's description fleeing the vicinity of the Gill residence around the time of the murders. Following his arrest for the fatal stabbing of a teenager in Texas in 1999, Sells began confessing to numerous unsolved crimes across the country. He provided details about the Gill homicide that corroborated the witness accounts and the nature of the crime scene. Although Sells was never tried specifically for the deaths of Colleen and Tiffany Gill, authorities closed the case based on his confession and the supporting circumstantial evidence. Sells was ultimately executed by lethal injection in Texas in 2014 for his other capital convictions.
