In the late hours of a November weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, the life of 45-year-old Renae Alexander, a Navy veteran and mother of three, was tragically cut short. On November 2, 2019, while leaving an event in the Mechanicsville neighborhood, Alexander found herself in the midst of a chaotic and violent carjacking attempt. She was in her silver Chevrolet Malibu when a masked man with a gun approached her.
At the same time, another woman in a Chevrolet Camaro nearby was also being
carjacked by a second masked individual. As the second victim tried to escape by reversing her car, she bumped into Alexander's vehicle. In the ensuing confusion, gunfire erupted. Renae Alexander was struck twice, and a friend who ran to her aid was shot in the leg. The suspects fled the scene in the stolen Camaro. Alexander was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the senseless violence led Atlanta police to identify four suspects. The first arrest was made on November 11, 2019, taking 19-year-old Shakiyah Jones into custody. In January 2020, a second suspect, 20-year-old Jacquez Barnes, was apprehended. The following month, the remaining two suspects, 21-year-old Reginald Bryant and 19-year-old Javonne Spencer, were also arrested. Bryant was already in jail on unrelated charges, and Spencer turned himself in to the authorities.
All four individuals, Shakiyah Jones, Jacquez Barnes, Reginald Bryant, and Javonne Spencer, were charged with murder for their alleged roles in the death of Renae Alexander. They were all held in the Fulton County Jail without bond. The arrests brought a measure of closure to a community shaken by the violent loss of a woman who had served her country and was a beloved mother.
