On a Sunday in late January 2020, 33-year-old Tyneshia Denise Shelby spent hours on the phone with her mother, Kimberly Henderson. The conversation only ended when a friend Tyneshia was expecting arrived at the Stockbridge, Georgia hotel where she was temporarily residing. She promised her mother she would call right back, but that was the last time they spoke.
The following morning, on January 27, 2020, Tyneshia was discovered in her hotel room, having been fatally shot.
Investigators utilized Tyneshia's cellphone records to quickly identify a person of interest: Raeshaun Antonie Jones. Tyneshia and Jones had been colleagues years earlier and had recently reconnected. Her mother indicated that while they had spent time together, her daughter was not interested in a romantic relationship with him. Jones had arranged to meet Tyneshia late that Sunday evening.
The investigation revealed a grim timeline. Prior to arriving at Tyneshia's hotel, authorities believe Jones had already murdered another woman. Alexis Reed, a 30-year-old coworker of Jones at Delta Air Lines, was found shot multiple times in a company employee parking lot after her shift ended around 10 p.m. on Sunday. The link between the two homicides led investigators to focus on Jones as the sole suspect in both slayings.
A joint investigation involving local and federal authorities located Jones on Tuesday, January 28, 2020. As law enforcement confronted him, Jones died by suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. With the death of the only suspect, the motive behind the killings of Tyneshia Shelby and Alexis Reed remains unknown to the public. Because Jones took his own life, he was never arrested or faced a trial for the murders.
