In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Atlanta, a sense of profound loss was about to descend upon a family. On May 18, 2024, 21-year-old Ne'Jah Cox was a passenger in a vehicle, her young toddler secured in the back seat, when tragedy struck. As the car traveled past an apartment complex on Center Street in the northwest part of the city, three men on foot approached and opened fire on the vehicle. The hail of bullets was devastating, and Ne'Jah Cox was fatally wounded.
Her child and the driver of the car were physically unharmed in the attack.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a targeted act. Surveillance footage from a nearby store captured the horrifying moment the gunmen unleashed their volley of shots at the passing car. Atlanta police worked to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. Their efforts led to the identification of suspects, and arrests soon followed.
Late in May, authorities took 23-year-old Jamal Baker into custody in connection with Cox's murder. He was booked into the Fulton County Jail, facing serious charges. His charges included murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and cruelty to children in the second degree. The investigation continued, and in mid-June, a second suspect was apprehended. Cartez Harvey, 19 years old, was also arrested and faced the same charges as Baker: murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a felony, and cruelty to children in the second degree. The arrests brought a measure of progress in the case, though the motive for the targeted shooting was not immediately released to the public.
