On an autumn morning in Atlanta, Georgia, the life of a promising young lawyer, Courtney Camille Cox, a 32-year-old Black / African American female, was tragically cut short. On October 20, 2021, she was found deceased inside her apartment in a high-rise building on West Peachtree Street. The discovery came after a chaotic and violent series of events that began in the early hours of the morning.
Residents of the Atlantic House apartments were awakened by the sound of gunshots and
yelling. The gunman, later identified as 32-year-old Jarvis Jarrette, was seen on the balcony of Cox's 21st-floor apartment, firing a rifle. When Atlanta police officers responded to the scene, Jarrette engaged them in gunfire. The situation prompted a significant police presence, including a SWAT team, and the lockdown of the surrounding area for several hours. During the standoff, Jarrette was observed moving between balconies.
Once officers were able to secure the scene, they discovered Cox inside her apartment, having been shot and killed. Jarrette was also found deceased on the balcony. It was later determined that Cox and Jarrette had been in a romantic relationship that began over the summer of that year.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the officer-involved shooting aspect of the incident. The case was ultimately determined to be a murder-suicide, with Jarrette fatally shooting Cox before taking his own life. The motive behind the tragic event was not publicly released. Friends of the couple expressed shock, stating that they had appeared to be very happy together. Courtney Cox was remembered by friends and colleagues as a kind and vibrant individual with a bright future ahead of her. She was a graduate of Spelman College and Georgetown University Law Center and worked as an attorney at the Paul Hastings law firm.
