In the summer of 1997, a series of brutal crimes cast a shadow over the Atlanta metropolitan area, one of which was the tragic death of Gwendolyn B. Wyche. A 42-year-old female, Wyche was fatally shot multiple times in the back outside her home on July 30, 1997. She was rushed to Dekalb Medical Center, but medical professionals were unable to save her. The initial investigation suggested a failed robbery as a possible motive, with witnesses reporting a blue vehicle at the scene of the crime.
The weapon used in her murder was identified as a revolver.
The investigation into Gwendolyn Wyche's death soon connected her case to another homicide. Just two days after her murder, on August 1, 1997, a 52-year-old store worker named Pok Yeo Kim was shot and killed during a robbery. Ballistics evidence confirmed that the same revolver was used in both slayings, linking the two cases and indicating a single perpetrator was responsible. This connection prompted police to release surveillance footage from the store robbery to the public in the hopes of identifying the suspect.
A significant breakthrough in the case came when the mother of 21-year-old Charles Lee Duffy recognized her son in the televised surveillance footage and contacted the authorities. At the time of the murders, Duffy was on probation, having been released from prison in January 1997 after serving time for robbery and auto theft. Following his mother's tip, police arrested a man under the influence of drugs who initially identified himself as 'Tarus Smith.' It was later confirmed that this individual was, in fact, Charles Lee Duffy.
In March 1998, Charles Lee Duffy confessed to the murders of both Gwendolyn Wyche and Pok Yeo Kim and pleaded guilty. He received two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for these crimes. Further investigation by the Fulton County Cold Case Unit, formed in 2003, would link Duffy to a third murder. In 2005, DNA evidence from the June 24, 1997, unsolved murder of 48-year-old Priscilla Culberson was matched to Duffy. Confronted with this new evidence, he confessed to her murder as well and received an additional life sentence without the possibility of parole in 2007. Charles Lee Duffy, a serial killer, is now serving multiple life sentences in the Georgia state prison system.
