In the summer of 2023, the life of 19-year-old Shanorria Wyche was tragically cut short in a burst of violence at a southeast Atlanta apartment complex. On the night of June 24th, Atlanta police were called to the Capitol Vanira Apartments on Hank Aaron Drive around 10:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Ms.
Wyche with a fatal gunshot wound and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a senseless act of violence that had claimed an unintended victim. According to an arrest warrant, Lavar McNair, who was 18 years old at the time, was in the parking lot of the apartment complex where he opened fire on a vehicle. During this barrage of gunfire, a bullet struck Shanorria Wyche in the head, ending her life. The warrant also indicated the reckless nature of the shooting, as at least one other bullet penetrated a nearby home, narrowly missing another individual.
In November of that year, an arrest was made in connection with the killing. Lavar McNair was taken into custody and initially faced a murder charge for his role in Wyche's death. However, in a subsequent court proceeding updated in August 2024, McNair pleaded guilty to a series of lesser charges. His plea included involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, criminal damage to property, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and various gang-related charges.
As a result of his guilty plea, Lavar McNair was handed a 20-year sentence. The terms of his sentence stipulate that he must serve eight of those years in prison, followed by seven years on probation. The remaining five years of his sentence could be suspended, contingent on his adherence to the law following his release. As part of his plea agreement, McNair is prohibited from having any contact with the Wyche family and is banned from Fulton County, except for legal matters. He is also forbidden from any gang involvement and from maintaining a social media presence.
