In the winter of 2018, the life of 15-year-old Nacari 'Cari' Newson was tragically cut short in southwest Atlanta. On the evening of January 24th, Nacari was outside a home on Greenleaf Circle when she sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency services transported her to Grady Memorial Hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries and passed away on January 25, 2018.
Initial reports to the police suggested that the shooting was the result of a drive-by.
However, as investigators began to piece together the evidence at the scene, the story started to change. The physical evidence did not align with a drive-by shooting, leading authorities to question the initial account. Their investigation pointed to the shooting having occurred in the yard of the residence. A search of the home uncovered firearms, including the one believed to have been used in the incident.
The investigation led to an acquaintance of Nacari, 17-year-old Micah Bolton. Authorities stated that Bolton initially claimed a drive-by shooting had occurred. He later admitted to firing his weapon in response to a car that he alleged was shooting at him. Despite the preliminary belief by police that the shooting may have been an accident, Bolton's conflicting statements and actions led to his arrest.
Micah Bolton turned himself in to the Fulton County Jail. He was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony. Under Georgia law, an individual can be charged with murder if they commit a felony that results in another person's death. Bolton was denied bond and his first court appearance was scheduled for February 14, 2018.
