In a tragic turn of events, 74-year-old Lorene Nealous of Atlanta, Georgia, was killed in a violent domestic incident. Her life was cut short when she was fatally shot by her own grandson.
The grim sequence of events unfolded when Terrell Gas, 36, first shot his mother, Ava Fitzpatrick, in the face. Following the initial shooting, Gas then proceeded to kill his grandmother, Lorene Nealous, at their residence in Lithonia.
Fitzpatrick, from her hospital bed where she was recovering, expressed her shock and confusion over her son's actions, stating that he and his grandmother had a loving relationship.
Following the shootings, Gas fled the scene, leading to a police pursuit. The chase came to a dramatic and fatal conclusion when Gas was shot and killed by a Georgia State Patrol trooper on an I-285 exit ramp after he reportedly fired at the trooper.
In the aftermath, a grieving Ava Fitzpatrick has spoken out about the need for better mental health resources, suggesting that her son may have been struggling with issues that led to this tragedy. A celebration of life service for Lorene Nealous was held on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at the Willie A. Watkins Lithonia Chapel.
