On October 14, 2021, the life of 37-year-old Joyce Rochelle Yates, an African American woman, was tragically cut short in Atlanta, Georgia. A mother of five, Yates was remembered by those who knew her for her great sense of humor. Her sudden death left her family and community in shock.
In the early hours of that Thursday morning, Yates was discovered fatally shot in a parking lot of a largely abandoned strip mall near the intersection of Metropolitan Parkway and Lakewood Avenue in
southwest Atlanta. The grim discovery prompted an immediate and intensive investigation by the Atlanta Police Department. The collaborative efforts of several law enforcement units, including the Active Criminal Enforcement unit, Georgia State Patrol, Gangs unit, and Zone 3 police, quickly led to a breakthrough in the case.
Just a day after Joyce Yates's body was found, police arrested 17-year-old Nigel Sherrod Andrews of Atlanta. Andrews was charged as an adult with a string of serious offenses, including felony murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, aggravated assault, and carjacking. Following his arrest, he was booked into the Fulton County Jail where he was held without bond. The case against him is ongoing as the legal process seeks to bring closure and justice for the untimely death of Joyce Yates.
