On a peaceful Thursday morning in Atlanta, Georgia, the life of 24-year-old Shanna Smith was tragically cut short in a hail of bullets. A Black female, Smith was on her way home from her overnight shift at an Amazon warehouse in Union City on August 4, 2016. In an act of kindness, she had given a coworker a ride home to Hadlock Street in the southwestern part of the city.
After dropping off her colleague, Smith pulled away in her dark-colored BMW, unknowingly driving into a deadly ambush.
As she drove, a group of five men opened fire on her vehicle, unleashing a barrage of bullets. Her car, riddled with bullets, veered off the road and crashed into a ditch, wedged between shrubs and trees with its wheels still spinning. When police arrived, they found Smith slumped behind the wheel. She had been shot at least twice in the head. Investigators at the scene discovered a significant amount of evidence, including at least 43 shell casings from various firearms, including two AR-15 rifles.
The investigation soon revealed that Shanna Smith was the innocent victim of a tragic case of mistaken identity. The intended targets were involved in a rival gang conflict, and Smith just happened to be driving a car that was similar to the one they were looking for. She had no connection to any gang or criminal activity. The shooting was an act of retaliation for the shooting of a fellow gang member the day before.
Authorities were able to identify the suspects involved in the senseless killing. Three men were arrested shortly after the shooting. Two of the main perpetrators, Matthew Larkins, 37, and Travon Mack, 27, were eventually convicted of murder, participation in a criminal street gang, aggravated assault, and other charges in October 2019. Both men were sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 25 years. Another co-defendant, Richard Ash, was tried at the same time, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict in his case. One of the suspects, after being apprehended, dropped his cellphone at the crime scene, which helped detectives to track him down and implicate the other four individuals.
