Carl Eric "Charlie" Brandt: A Hidden History of Murder

Carl Eric "Charlie" Brandt was an American serial killer whose violent history remained largely concealed from friends, coworkers, neighbors, and even members of his own extended family for more than three decades. Brandt was born on February 23, 1957, and spent part of his childhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His known crimes began when he was only thirteen years old and ended in September 2004, when the murders of his wife and niece exposed a family secret dating back to 1971. The investigation that followed his death eventually connected him to another Florida homicide and caused detectives to examine several additional unsolved murders for possible links. Brandt is considered responsible for four established homicides: his mother Ilsa Brandt in 1971, Sherry Perisho in 1989, his wife Teresa "Teri" Brandt in 2004, and his niece Michelle Lynn Jones in 2004. Investigators also studied several other killings, particularly those of Carol Lynn Sullivan, Lisa Sanders, and Darlene Toler. Although those additional cases attracted considerable investigative attention, the publicly available evidence does not establish Brandt's responsibility for them to the same degree as the four known victims.

The Murder of His Mother in 1971

Brandt's first known killing occurred on January 3, 1971, inside his family's home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was thirteen years old. His father, Herbert Brandt, was preparing for bed while his mother, Ilsa Brandt, was taking a bath. Ilsa was approximately eight months pregnant at the time. Brandt obtained his father's handgun and entered the bathroom, where he opened fire on both parents. Herbert Brandt was shot but survived his injuries. Ilsa Brandt, age 38, was killed, as was her unborn child. Brandt then went to the bedroom of his older sister Angela and attempted to shoot her. The weapon failed to fire, and Angela was ultimately able to escape and obtain help. Brandt was taken into custody, but because of his young age he did not face a conventional adult murder prosecution. Psychological evaluations were conducted, and he spent approximately a year in a psychiatric institution before eventually being released back into his family's care. The shooting became a closely guarded family secret. After Brandt's release, the family relocated to Florida. His two younger sisters reportedly grew up believing that their mother had died in an accident rather than having been murdered by their brother. Brandt later established an outwardly conventional adult life, studied electronics, worked in technical fields, and married Teresa "Teri" Helfrich in 1986. Eventually, the couple settled on Big Pine Key in the Florida Keys.

The Unsolved Murder of Sherry Perisho

On July 16, 1989, the body of 38-year-old Sherry Perisho was discovered near the North Pine Channel Bridge in the Big Pine Key area of Monroe County, Florida. Perisho had been living in the area and reportedly stayed on a small boat. She had suffered severe cutting injuries, and her body had been mutilated. Her heart had been removed. At the time, investigators were unable to identify her killer. The location later became extremely important. Brandt lived only a short distance from the area where Perisho was found. Investigators also revisited a composite drawing made from information provided by a witness who had seen a man near the scene. Brandt was considered physically similar to the man depicted in the composite. Additional information reportedly emerged indicating that Teri Brandt had privately expressed suspicions about her husband's activities around the time of Perisho's death. After the 2004 murders exposed Brandt's history and his interest in anatomy and dismemberment, Monroe County investigators reopened the Perisho investigation. The similarities between the injuries suffered by Perisho and those later inflicted upon Michelle Jones drew particular attention. Detectives ultimately concluded that Brandt was responsible. On May 6, 2006, authorities announced that the long-unsolved murder of Sherry Perisho had been attributed to Carl Brandt and the case was closed with him identified as the killer. ...
