On November 18, 1987, after Keith failed to report to work, police were called to the Dardeen residence. Sells claimed he met Keith at a truck stop and was invited to the home, where events escalated. However, his confession was riddled with inconsistencies and factual errors. Authorities and the Dardeen family expressed skepticism, noting Sells' history of false confessions. He was never charged in connection with the Dardeen murders, and no physical evidence linked him to the crime.
