Between 1993 and 2000, a series of brutal, escalating attacks cast a dark shadow over the Fort Smith area in Sebastian and Crawford counties, Arkansas. The man responsible for this reign of terror was Charles Ray Vines, a predator who came to be known as the River Valley Killer. To his neighbors, Vines appeared to be a well-liked father and an ordinary member of the local community. However, beneath this unremarkable daytime facade lay a sadistic monster who moonlighted as a violent serial rapist and killer. Vines specialized in home invasions, breaking into residences to overpower vulnerable women. Over the course of his criminal career, he was officially linked to the rapes of four women, murdering two of them, and then committing horrific acts of desecration on their corpses.

The 1993 Jenny Lind Road Home Invasion

The true extent of Vines' depravity was introduced to local law enforcement in 1993, following a devastating home invasion in Fort Smith. Vines targeted a residence situated near the railroad tracks off Jenny Lind Road. Upon forcing entry, he was confronted by two women. Exhibiting sudden, overwhelming violence, Vines struck one of the middle-aged women, knocking her instantly unconscious. Believing the first victim to be dead, Vines then turned his full, horrific attention to Juanita Wofford. He subjected Wofford to a brutal sexual assault before viciously stabbing her to death. The extreme violence of the crime scene deeply disturbed investigators.
