In the summer of 1995, a quiet community in Crawford County, Arkansas, was unsettled by a brutal crime. On August 9th, 74-year-old Ruth Henderson, a female resident, was found violently murdered in her Van Buren home. The scene was one of extreme violence, with Henderson having sustained numerous stab wounds. Her death mirrored another unsolved murder from two years prior, that of 58-year-old Juanita Wofford in the neighboring Sebastian County, raising fears of a potential serial killer in the
River Valley.
The investigation into Henderson's death initially led authorities down a misleading path. Another man was arrested and charged with a similar crime, leading investigators to believe they had their culprit. However, the stark similarities between the Henderson and Wofford cases, particularly the brutal nature of the attacks, prompted a re-evaluation of the evidence. For five years, the case grew cold, leaving the community on edge and the families of the victims without answers.
A breakthrough finally came in March of 2000. A man named Charles Ray Vines was arrested in the act of committing another violent assault. As investigators delved into his background, they uncovered a history of violence. Crucially, DNA evidence collected from the scenes of both Ruth Henderson's and Juanita Wofford's murders was a match to Vines. Faced with the irrefutable scientific evidence, Vines confessed to the murders of both women, as well as other violent crimes, including rape and burglary. In 2001, Charles Ray Vines was convicted of two counts of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He would later die in prison in 2019, closing a dark chapter for the community and the families of his victims.
