In the autumn of 1984, the body of 28-year-old Lisa Nichols, a female resident of West Virginia, was discovered alongside Interstate 40 near West Memphis, Arkansas. She had been strangled and was found wearing only a sweater. It is believed that she may have been hitchhiking from a truck stop before her death. Her body was not identified until 1985 by a couple with whom she had previously stayed.
