Early Life and First Murders
Randall Greenawalt, born on February 24, 1949, in Hannibal, Missouri, began his criminal activities in the early 1970s. His first known murders occurred in January 1974. Greenawalt was convicted for the following crimes:- Victim: Henry A. Weber, a 42-year-old truck driver. Date: January 12, 1974. Location: A highway rest area in Mississippi County, Arkansas. Weber was shot in the head.
- Victim: Stanley Edward Sandage, a 33-year-old truck driver. Date: January 15, 1974. Location: A rest area near Flagstaff, Arizona. Sandage was shot to death, and $42 was stolen from his wallet.
Escape and Killing Spree
In 1978, while serving a life sentence for the 1974 murders, Greenawalt escaped from prison with fellow inmate Gary Tison and Tison's three sons. This led to a two-week killing spree across Arizona and Colorado, resulting in six additional deaths:- Victims: Marine Sgt. John Lyons (24), his wife Donnelda (23), their 22-month-old son Christopher, and their niece Teresa Tyson (15). Date: July 31, 1978. Location: Near Yuma, Arizona. The family was kidnapped and killed.
- Victims: James and Margene Judge, newlyweds. Date: August 1978. Location: Near Pagosa Springs, Colorado. The couple was killed, and their vehicle was stolen.
Capture and Execution
