In the vast and unforgiving desert landscape near Quartzsite, Arizona, a chilling chapter of violence unfolded in the summer of 1978, forever marking the life and tragic death of 15-year-old Teresa-Jo Tyson. Her story is interwoven with a brazen prison escape and a subsequent reign of terror that gripped the state in fear. The young female's life was cut short on July 31, 1978, when she and her family encountered a group of fugitives whose desperation and brutality knew no bounds.
The
ordeal began when escaped convicts Gary Tison and Randy Greenawalt, aided by Tison’s three sons, broke out of the Arizona State Prison in Florence. Their flight from the law led them to a chance and fatal encounter with the Lyons family, who were traveling near Quartzsite. Teresa-Jo was with her uncle, Marine Sgt. John F. Lyons, his wife Donnelda, and their 22-month-old son, Christopher. In an act of kindness that would prove fatal, John Lyons stopped to help what he believed were stranded motorists. This decision plunged his family into a nightmare.
The fugitives, led by the ruthless Gary Tison, showed no mercy. John, Donnelda, and little Christopher were shot and killed. Teresa-Jo was also shot but was not immediately killed; instead, she was left wounded in the harsh desert to bleed to death. Her body was later discovered about a half-mile from where her family members were slain. The discovery of the family sent shockwaves through the community and triggered one of the largest manhunts in Arizona's history.
The Tison gang's bloody crime spree continued, leading to more deaths before they were finally cornered. In a dramatic shootout with law enforcement, one of Tison's sons, Donald, was killed. Gary Tison managed to escape into the desert on foot, but his freedom was short-lived; his body was found weeks later, having succumbed to the brutal desert elements. Randy Greenawalt and the two remaining Tison sons, Raymond and Ricky, were captured. Greenawalt and the Tison brothers were tried and convicted for their roles in the horrific crime spree. Greenawalt was sentenced to death and ultimately executed for his crimes. The Tison brothers also initially received death sentences, which were later resentenced to life in prison.
