In the summer of 1978, a young family's journey turned into a horrifying tragedy in the Arizona desert. Donnelda Lyons, a 23-year-old woman, was traveling with her husband, 24-year-old Marine Sergeant John Lyons, their 22-month-old son, Christopher, and their 15-year-old niece, Theresa Tyson. On July 31st, near Quartzsite, Arizona, their path fatefully crossed with that of escaped convicts Gary Tison and his accomplice, Randy Greenawalt.
Tison had recently broken out of the Arizona State Prison with the help of his three sons, who smuggled weapons into the facility. When the fugitives' vehicle broke down, the Lyons family, in an act of kindness, stopped to offer assistance.
This compassionate act led to their abduction at gunpoint. The escaped convicts forced the Lyons family into their own vehicle and drove them into the desolate desert landscape. There, their lives were brutally cut short. Donnelda, John, and little Christopher were shot and killed. Theresa Tyson, who had attempted to flee, was also found deceased a short distance away. The discovery of their bodies a few days later, on August 6th, launched a massive and intense manhunt for the perpetrators who had committed such a senseless and violent act against an innocent family.
The ensuing investigation and pursuit of the Tison gang captured the nation's attention. After a continued crime spree that included more murders, a confrontation with law enforcement led to the death of one of Tison's sons. Gary Tison himself managed to escape into the desert, only to be found later, having succumbed to exposure. Randy Greenawalt and the two surviving Tison sons were apprehended. The wheels of justice turned, leading to convictions for the horrific crimes. Randy Greenawalt was ultimately sentenced to death and was executed in 1997. The Tison brothers received life sentences for their roles in the brutal murders that ended the lives of Donnelda Lyons and her family.
