John F. Lyons, a 24-year-old Caucasian male, was a Marine Sergeant with a young family. On July 31, 1978, what began as a journey from Yuma, Arizona, to visit relatives in Omaha, Nebraska, turned into a horrific tragedy for him and his loved ones. Traveling with his wife Donnelda, their 22-month-old son Christopher, and their 15-year-old niece Teresa Tyson, the family drove through the Arizona desert.
Near the small town of Quartzsite, they came across a seemingly stranded vehicle and, in an act of kindness, stopped to offer their assistance.
The occupants of the disabled car were not ordinary travelers in distress. They were a group of escaped convicts, a dangerous crew led by Gary Tison, who had broken out of the Arizona State Prison just a day earlier with the help of his three sons, Donald, Ricky, and Raymond. With them was fellow inmate Randy Greenawalt. The Tison gang, now in desperate need of a new vehicle, saw the Lyons family's stop as an opportunity. The family's compassion was met with brutal violence as they were forcibly taken captive by the fugitives.
The Tison gang's desperation and ruthlessness led to the senseless murder of the entire Lyons family. John, Donnelda, and their infant son Christopher were all shot to death, their bodies later discovered near their abandoned car in the desolate landscape near Quartzsite. The body of their niece, Teresa, was found a short distance away. This monstrous act sparked an extensive manhunt for the escaped convicts. The gang's flight from justice was a violent one, but it was ultimately short-lived.
In the ensuing pursuit, one of the sons, Donald Tison, was killed in a shootout with police. The patriarch of the murderous clan, Gary Tison, managed to escape into the desert alone but would not survive the harsh conditions; he later died of exposure. The remaining members of the gang, Ricky and Raymond Tison, along with Randy Greenawalt, were captured. They were subsequently tried and convicted for their roles in the brutal slaying of the Lyons family, a crime that began with a simple act of roadside assistance and ended in a heartbreaking loss of innocent lives.
