Robert Card and the 2023 Lewiston, Maine Mass Murders
Who he was
Robert R. Card II (age 40) was a U.S. Army Reservist from Bowdoin, Maine, whose behavior had raised serious concerns among family and fellow reservists in the months leading up to the attack. Records and reporting describe a deteriorating mental state, a July 2023 psychiatric evaluation following erratic conduct during training, and multiple welfare checks in September 2023 after warnings that he might commit a mass shooting.
The attacks (October 25, 2023)
On the evening of October 25, 2023, Card carried out two consecutive shootings in Lewiston, Maine. At 6:56 p.m., 911 calls reported gunfire at Just-In-Time Recreation (a bowling alley). At 7:08 p.m., police received reports of an active shooter at Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant, about four miles away. In total, 18 people were killed and 13 were wounded, making it the deadliest mass shooting in Maine’s history.
Manhunt and death
A multi-agency manhunt followed. Authorities identified Card publicly that night, found his vehicle at a Lisbon boat ramp, and ordered shelter-in-place advisories across multiple towns. On October 27, 2023, investigators found Card dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a recycling center in Lisbon where he had previously worked.
