On the evening of October 25, 2023, Jason Adam Walker, a 51-year-old White/Caucasian male from Sabattus, Maine, lost his life in a heroic act of self-sacrifice. He was at the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley in Lewiston with his wife and friends when a gunman opened fire on the patrons. Known as a protector of his family, Walker, along with his lifelong friend Michael Deslauriers, did not hesitate to confront the shooter in an attempt to shield their loved ones and others from harm.
Walker and Deslauriers were tragically killed as they charged toward the gunman, 40-year-old Robert Card, an Army reservist. Their actions were credited with saving the lives of their wives and several young children who were present. The rampage, which also targeted Schemengees Bar and Grille, resulted in the deaths of 18 people and left 13 others injured. The tragic event shook the close-knit Maine community.
In the days that followed, a massive manhunt for Robert Card was launched. He was found two days later, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing a somber end to the search for the person responsible for the devastating loss of life. No arrests were made in connection with the shooting due to the suspect's death. Jason Walker was remembered by his family and friends as a selfless and giving individual, a devoted husband, and a protective father to his two sons. His final moments were a testament to his character, as he laid down his life in an effort to save others.
