On November 8, 2006, in Lewiston, Maine, 65-year-old Roland "Gerry" Poirier was fatally shot during his birthday celebration at his Grove Street home. As he dined with family and friends, a bullet pierced through a sliding glass door, striking him in the neck. The suddenness of the incident left attendees in shock, initially mistaking the shattering of a wine bottle for the source of the disturbance.
