On October 25, 2023, Keith Macneir, a 64-year-old Caucasian male, was fatally shot in Lewiston, Maine. Macneir, who resided in Florida, was visiting his son in the Lewiston area to celebrate his recent birthday. That evening, they went to Schemengees Bar & Grille. His son left for a union meeting with plans to return, leaving his father at the bar to socialize with some of his son's coworkers.
While at the bar, a gunman opened fire, killing Macneir and several others.
The incident was part of a mass shooting that also targeted a bowling alley in Lewiston, resulting in a total of 18 fatalities. Macneir was not a resident of Maine and was remembered by his niece as a friendly and kind person who was likely making new friends at the time of the shooting. Friends and family described him as someone with a great personality who was open with everyone and made people feel welcome.
The perpetrator of the mass shooting was identified as Robert Card. Following the attacks, a large-scale manhunt was initiated to locate him. Authorities found Card's vehicle in Lisbon, a town near Lewiston. Two days after the shooting, Card was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near a river in Lisbon Falls. An arrest warrant had been issued for Card on multiple counts of murder before he was discovered.
