A resident of Lewiston and a beloved member of the deaf community, Vozzella was participating in a cornhole tournament at Schemengees Bar & Grille when the gunman opened fire.
This event was one of two locations targeted that evening, the other being the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley.
Originally from Massachusetts, Vozzella had moved to Maine and was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a loving father and husband, deeply involved in his community. His death, along with three other members of the deaf community at the cornhole tournament, sent shockwaves through their tight-knit circle and the broader Lewiston community. Friends and family remembered him as a kind and friendly man who will be profoundly missed.
The perpetrator of this senseless act of violence was identified as 40-year-old Robert Card, an Army reservist from Bowdoin, Maine. Following the shootings, Card fled the scene, sparking an extensive two-day manhunt that put local communities on high alert. Law enforcement agencies from local, state, and federal levels were involved in the search.
There was no arrest in the case, as the suspect was found dead before he could be apprehended. On October 27, 2023, Robert Card was discovered in a trailer at a recycling center in Lisbon, Maine, where he had previously been employed. His death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An autopsy later confirmed his cause of death as suicide. The investigation into the motive for the tragic shootings remains ongoing.
