Aminadab Gaxiola Gonzalez and the 2021 Orange Office Shooting

Overview

Aminadab Gaxiola Gonzalez is accused of carrying out a mass shooting at a small office complex in Orange, California, on March 31, 2021. Four people were killed, including a nine-year-old boy, and a fifth victim was critically wounded. Authorities said Gonzalez knew the adult victims through personal or business relationships and did not appear to have selected the location or its occupants at random. The attack occurred at 202 West Lincoln Avenue, a two-story commercial building containing several small businesses. Investigators described a carefully prepared assault in which Gonzalez allegedly brought a semiautomatic handgun, additional ammunition, pepper spray and handcuffs. He was also accused of securing the entrances to the building's courtyard with a bicycle-style cable lock, temporarily preventing victims from escaping and delaying officers attempting to enter.

The March 31, 2021 Attack

The Orange Police Department began receiving reports of gunfire at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, 2021. Officers arrived within minutes and heard additional shots coming from inside the business complex. When they reached the courtyard entrances, they discovered that gates had been locked from the inside with a cable device. The gunfire occurred in different areas of the property, including offices on both levels and the central courtyard. Witnesses in neighboring businesses reported hearing several rapid groups of gunshots. Police said the victims were trapped inside the complex while the attacker moved through the property. Officers eventually entered the courtyard and encountered Gonzalez while he was still armed. Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and police. Gonzalez was struck in the head by an officer's bullet and seriously wounded. Two officers were allegedly fired upon but were not physically injured. After the shooting stopped, officers found four victims dead or mortally wounded. A fifth victim, Blanca Tamayo, had suffered a severe gunshot wound to the head but survived. Her nine-year-old son, Matthew Farias, was found dead in her arms in the courtyard.

• Luis Tovar, 50 Killed on March 31, 2021, inside the office complex at 202 West Lincoln Avenue in Orange, California. Tovar operated Unified Homes, a manufactured-home sales business located at the property. Authorities said he had a prior business and personal connection to Gonzalez.
• Jenevieve Vega, 28 Killed on March 31, 2021, at the Orange office complex. Vega was Luis Tovar's daughter and worked with him at Unified Homes.
• Leticia Solis, 58 Killed on March 31, 2021, inside the business complex. Solis was associated with the business and was among the adults whom investigators said Gonzalez knew.
• Matthew Farias, 9 Killed on March 31, 2021, in the courtyard of the office complex. Matthew had accompanied his mother, Blanca Tamayo, to the property. Police found him in his wounded mother's arms.
• Blanca Tamayo Critically wounded by a gunshot to the head on March 31, 2021. She survived the attack but was reported to have suffered serious and lasting injuries. She was the mother of Matthew Farias.
