Overview

Richard Scott Baumhammers (born May 17, 1965) was an immigration lawyer from Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, who carried out a racially motivated shooting spree on April 28, 2000, in the Pittsburgh area. Over the course of about two hours, he targeted individuals of various ethnic and racial minority backgrounds, killing five and leaving one paralyzed. His rampage included arson, synagogue vandalism, and shooting attacks across Allegheny and Beaver Counties.

Timeline and Victims

• April 28, 2000, ~1:30 p.m. – Anita “Nikki” Gordon, 63, a Jewish neighbor in Mt. Lebanon, was shot and killed outside her home. Baumhammers then set her house on fire using a Molotov cocktail.
• ~1:35 p.m. – At the Beth El Congregation synagogue in Scott Township, he vandalized the building—shooting out windows and spray-painting swastikas and the word “Jew” on the façade.
• ~1:55 p.m. – At India Grocer in Scott Towne Center, Anil Thakur, 31, an Indian electrical engineer, was shot and killed. Sandip Patel, about 25 or 26, was shot and left paralyzed—he later died in 2007 from complications.
• ~2:15–2:30 p.m. – At Ya-Fei Chinese Restaurant in Robinson Town Centre, Ji-Ye Sun, 34 (restaurant manager), and Thao Pak Pham (27, a Vietnamese cook) were fatally shot.
• ~3:00 p.m. – At C.S. Kim Karate Studio in Center Township (Beaver County), Garry Lee, 22 (African-American karate student), was shot and killed. A white friend present—George Thomas II—was deliberately spared.
• ~3:15 p.m. – Baumhammers was apprehended by police in Ambridge as he drove away. In his vehicle were found: a .357 Magnum revolver, live ammunition, spent casings, Molotov cocktails, and spray paint.
