Elliot Rodger and the 2014 Isla Vista Killings

Overview

Elliot Oliver Robertson Rodger was a 22-year-old mass murderer responsible for a coordinated series of stabbings, shootings and vehicle attacks in Isla Vista, California, on May 23, 2014. Isla Vista is a densely populated community next to the University of California, Santa Barbara. Rodger murdered six people and injured fourteen others before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The violence occurred at several locations, beginning inside Rodger's apartment and continuing through the streets and commercial areas of Isla Vista. Three victims were stabbed to death, while three others were fatally shot. Seven additional people suffered gunshot wounds, and seven were injured when Rodger struck them with his car. All six murder victims were students at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Background and Planning

Rodger was born on July 24, 1991, in London, England, and later moved with his family to California. During the period before the murders, he attended classes at several community colleges, including Santa Barbara City College, but he was no longer enrolled when the attack occurred. He lived at the Capri Apartments at 6504 Seville Road in Isla Vista. Investigators determined that Rodger had planned the attack for an extended period. He purchased three semiautomatic handguns and accumulated hundreds of rounds of ammunition. The firearms included two SIG Sauer P226 pistols and a Glock 34 pistol. Authorities said the weapons were legally purchased in California. Rodger produced an extensive autobiographical document in which he described his personal history, social isolation, resentment, misogyny and violent fantasies. He blamed women for rejecting him and expressed hostility toward men whom he believed were more socially or romantically successful. Shortly before beginning the public portion of the attack, he distributed the document electronically and uploaded a recorded statement announcing what he called a "day of retribution."

The Apartment Murders

The first three murders occurred inside Rodger's apartment on Seville Road. His two roommates, Cheng Yuan "James" Hong and Weihan "David" Wang, lived there with him. Their friend, George Chen, was visiting the apartment. Investigators concluded that Rodger attacked the three men separately as they entered or moved through the residence. He used knives and inflicted numerous wounds. Evidence indicated that a violent struggle occurred inside the apartment. Rodger attempted to conceal evidence by cleaning portions of the residence and covering the victims before leaving. The exact time of the apartment killings could not be determined, but authorities believed the men were murdered several hours before the shootings began on the streets.
