Tashfeen Malik and the 2015 San Bernardino Mass Murder

Overview

On December 2, 2015, Tashfeen Malik and her husband, Syed Rizwan Farook, carried out a mass shooting at a San Bernardino County Department of Public Health training event and holiday gathering inside a conference room at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California. In less than three minutes, they murdered 14 people and wounded 22 others before fleeing; both attackers were later killed in a shootout with police that afternoon.

Timeline of the Attack

That morning, Farook attended the workplace event, left around 10:30 a.m., and returned with Malik. At approximately 10:58 a.m. PST, the pair opened fire with rifles and pistols; they escaped within minutes. Around 3:08 p.m., officers engaged the suspects after spotting their SUV; by roughly 3:14 p.m., a brief gun battle ended with both perpetrators dead and two officers injured.

Weapons and Explosives

Investigators reported the couple used AR-15–style rifles and 9 mm semi-automatic pistols. Inside the conference room they also left a failed improvised explosive device composed of three pipe bombs wired to a remote-control car—an apparent secondary device intended to detonate after the shooting. Searches of their home uncovered twelve additional pipe bombs, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and materials to make more explosive devices. ...Read More
