Weihan David Wang was a 20-year-old Chinese-born male university student from Fremont, California, who died on May 23, 2014. A junior studying computer engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he had immigrated to the United States years earlier and was remembered as a peaceful, high-achieving young man with strong Christian faith. Friends and family recalled his gentle character, devotion to basketball, and his love for the Lakers.
He was the only child of his parents, and they described him as “the joy of the family,” proud of his academic and personal accomplishments, and with big aspirations for the future. At school, he was known for his academic focus and his contributions to student life, including helping code a campus guide called Gaucho Life. He attended Fremont Christian School, where he graduated in 2012, and was praised for his exemplary character and high academic achievement. At UCSB, he continued to make an impression as a hardworking and modest student. He was fond of a biblical verse from John emphasizing selfless love: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
On the evening of May 23, 2014, Weihan David Wang was fatally stabbed in his apartment in Isla Vista, a neighborhood adjacent to UCSB. He was killed by his roommate, Elliot Rodger, who attacked him with knives, inflicting multiple stab wounds—Wang was stabbed approximately 15 times and slashed some 23 times. He tried to defend himself but succumbed to his injuries; his body was found face-down in a bedroom, partially covered with blankets and clothing. Fellow roommates Cheng Yuan “James” Hong, a 20-year-old male student, and George Chen, 19, a male student and friend visiting, were also stabbed and killed in the same apartment that night. The murders marked the tragic beginning of a broader rampage in Isla Vista.
Authorities identified the suspect in the killings as 22-year-old Elliot Rodger, a Santa Barbara City College student and the roommates' housemate. Rodger had penned a 137-page manifesto detailing his intentions and grievances, then initiated the murders. After killing Weihan David Wang, Cheng Yuan Hong, and George Chen, he carried out further violent attacks—fatally shooting two sorority members and another student, injuring several others, and ultimately taking his own life. There were no arrests made, as the suspect died during the rampage.
Weihan David Wang’s death, along with those of his two young male friends, was deeply mourned. His parents, Jinshuang “Jane” Liu and Charlie Wang, described losing their only child as heartbreaking, especially since he had been planning to move out of the apartment due to tensions with their roommate, and looked forward to returning home for the summer, going on a family trip, and celebrating his 21st birthday. The families of the victims later filed lawsuits alleging that the apartment housing company and the sheriff’s office ignored warning signs about Rodger’s behavior, claiming the tragedy was preventable and raised concerns about background checks, mental health follow-up, and roommate assignments.
