Cherie Lash Rhoades — Alturas, California Mass Murder (2014)
Background
Cherie Lash Rhoades (also reported as Cherie Lash-Rhoades), a former chairwoman of the Cedarville Rancheria tribe in Modoc County, California, became the focus of a tribal eviction proceeding in early 2014. On February 20, 2014, she attended an eviction hearing at the tribe’s office and community center in Alturas, a small Northern California town.
The Attack — February 20, 2014
At approximately mid-afternoon during the eviction hearing, Rhoades produced a handgun and opened fire inside the Cedarville Rancheria Tribal Office in Alturas. After expending her ammunition, she armed herself with a butcher knife and continued the attack. One wounded survivor escaped and ran, covered in victims’ blood, to the nearby Alturas Police Department to raise the alarm. Officers arriving on scene encountered Rhoades outside the building with a knife and subdued her. In total, four people were killed and two others were critically injured.
