Crime Timeline & Details
- Date & Time: November 13, 2022 – murders believed to have occurred between ~4:00 a.m. and ~4:25 a.m.
- Location: Off-campus house at 1122 King Road, Moscow, Idaho – three-story building with six bedrooms.
- Entry Method: Kohberger allegedly broke in through a second-floor sliding glass door around 4:00 a.m., entering into the kitchen. He then went upstairs to the third floor and killed Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, before heading back down to the second floor and killing Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin.
- Surviving Roommates: Two roommates—Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke—were present. Mortensen awoke to noises and heard a male voice saying something like, “It’s okay, I’m going to help you.” She then saw a masked figure in black walking past her and exiting through the sliding door. Unable to fully understand, she locked herself in. The roommates later discovered the victims and called 911.

- Xana Kernodle suffered over 50 stab wounds, many defensive in nature, indicating a violent struggle.
- Kaylee Goncalves was found “unrecognizable,” with over 30 stab wounds, many to her face.
- Madison Mogen had a massive facial wound and may have been killed while leaning against her best friend’s remains.
- Ethan Chapin sustained fatal wounds and was found hanging off Kernodle’s bed, with arterial blood spatter on the wall.
- Evidence Left Behind: Investigators found a KA-BAR knife sheath at the scene containing DNA. Genetic genealogy traced the DNA to Kohberger’s father, leading to his identification.
- Digital / Behavioral Evidence:
- Kohberger had stalked and researched the area for months.
- He searched for a police scanner feed in the early morning hours of the murders and reportedly switched his phone to airplane mode around 2:45 a.m.

On July 2, 2025, he pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and felony burglary, as part of a plea deal to avoid the death penalty.
