Kurt Myers’ 2013 Mohawk–Herkimer Mass Shooting
Overview
On March 13–14, 2013, 64-year-old Kurt Myers carried out a deadly shooting spree across the neighboring villages of Mohawk and Herkimer in Herkimer County, New York. He first set fire to his Mohawk apartment, then opened fire at a local barbershop and a nearby quick-lube/car-wash business, killing four men and wounding two others. The overnight manhunt ended the next morning when police entered an abandoned bar in Herkimer; Myers shot and killed an FBI K-9 named Ape before officers fatally shot him, ending the rampage.
Background and First Attack (Morning of March 13, 2013)
Shortly before 9:30 a.m. on March 13, Myers set a fire in his residence at 32 South Washington Street in Mohawk, then drove to John’s Barber Shop on Main Street. After a brief exchange with the owner, John Seymour, Myers produced a shotgun and opened fire. Two customers—Harry Montgomery Sr. and Michael G. Ransear—were killed; Seymour and another customer, Dan Haslauer, were wounded but survived. Myers fled the scene in a red Jeep with a black top.
Second Attack (Minutes Later on March 13, 2013)
Within minutes, Myers drove to Gaffey’s Fast Lube/Car Wash on Mohawk Street in the neighboring village of Herkimer and opened fire again, killing employee Thomas E. Stefka and customer Michael S. “Mikey” Renshaw, a New York State corrections officer.
