Overview

Edward Charles Allaway, a 37-year-old custodian at California State University, Fullerton, entered the campus library on **July 12, 1976**, armed with a .22-caliber semi-automatic rifle, and carried out a deadly mass shooting. The rampage took place in the library’s Instructional Media Center (IMC) in the basement and the first-floor lobby. He killed seven people and wounded two others. After the attack, he fled but surrendered at a nearby hotel where his estranged wife worked .

Sequence of Events

Allaway began by opening fire in the IMC and secretary's office, then moved through the hallway and toward stairs and elevators. Some victims were pursued, others were shot during a struggle. After running out of bullets, he fled, went to the Anaheim hotel, and called police to surrender: “I went berserk at Cal State Fullerton, and I committed some terrible act. I'd appreciate it if you people would come down and pick me up. I'm unarmed, and I’m giving myself up to you.” .

• Paul Herzberg, 30 – photographer in the IMC; shot in head and chest
• Bruce Jacobson, 32 – equipment technician in the IMC; shot in chest and back
• Seth Fessenden, 72 – professor emeritus, graphics department; shot
• Frank Teplansky, 51 – graphic artist, IMC; shot multiple times in head, neck, and back; died shortly after
• Donald Karges, 41 – custodian; shot in the back
• Deborah Paulsen, 25 – custodian; shot
• Stephen Becker, 32 – assistant librarian; wrestled with Allaway, struck him, then was fatally shot

Injured:

• Maynard Hoffman, 64 – custodial supervisor; shot in the chest
• Donald Keran, 55 – associate librarian; shot at point-blank range during struggle; wounded
