Nathan Gale and the 2004 Alrosa Villa Massacre
Background
Nathan Miles Gale was a 25-year-old former United States Marine from Marysville, Ohio, who carried out a deadly shooting during a rock concert on December 8, 2004. The attack occurred at the Alrosa Villa nightclub, located at 5055 Sinclair Road in Columbus, Ohio. Gale killed four people, including renowned guitarist Darrell "Dimebag Darrell" Abbott, and wounded three others before a Columbus police officer fatally shot him.
Gale was born on September 11, 1979, in Chicago, Illinois. After his parents separated, he moved with his mother to Marysville, Ohio. He attended Benjamin Logan High School before transferring to Marysville High School and receiving vocational training in construction and electrical work at the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center. He graduated in 1998.
People who knew Gale later described troubling changes in his behavior. He reportedly experienced intense paranoia and sometimes claimed that people were watching or following him. Former acquaintances said he made confused statements about the heavy metal band Pantera, including allegations that the band had stolen songs or ideas from him. These accounts were never established as a definitive explanation for the massacre.
Military Service and Deteriorating Behavior
Gale enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in February 2002. His period of military service was brief, and he received a discharge in 2003. Reports released after the shooting indicated that he had experienced significant mental-health problems, although the complete circumstances surrounding his condition and discharge were not immediately made public.
After returning to Ohio, Gale continued displaying erratic and confrontational behavior. He was known to attend heavy metal concerts and appeared particularly fixated on Pantera and Damageplan. Damageplan had been formed by guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott and drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott following Pantera's collapse as an active band.
On April 8, 2004, approximately eight months before the killings, Gale disrupted a Damageplan concert at Bogart's nightclub in Cincinnati, Ohio. He forced his way onto the stage and became involved in a struggle with security personnel and police. Equipment was damaged during the disturbance. Despite this warning incident, Gale was able to approach another Damageplan performance later that year while armed.
Arrival at the Alrosa Villa
On Wednesday, December 8, 2004, Damageplan was scheduled to headline a concert at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in northern Columbus. Opening bands performed before Damageplan's appearance. Witnesses noticed Gale waiting outside in the parking area during the opening acts. He reportedly indicated that he was interested only in seeing Damageplan.
Gale was wearing a Columbus Blue Jackets hockey jersey over a hooded sweatshirt. He carried a 9mm Beretta 92FS semiautomatic pistol and additional ammunition. Rather than entering through the normal admission area, he climbed over a wooden fence on the northern side of the property and gained access through a patio entrance. This allowed him to bypass the club's front-door procedures.
Damageplan took the stage at approximately 10:15 p.m. About five minutes later, while the band was performing the opening song of its set, Gale rushed toward the stage. Some audience members initially assumed that he was an overexcited fan or that the disturbance was part of the performance.
