Overview
On September 4, 2024, a 14-year-old student, Colt Gray, opened fire inside Apalachee High School in Winder, Barrow County, Georgia. Four people were killed—two students and two teachers—and nine others were injured and transported to area hospitals. Authorities said the suspect would be tried as an adult.
The Attacker
Colt Gray, a freshman at Apalachee High School who enrolled on August 14, 2024, surrendered to law enforcement within minutes of the first reports. State investigators said Gray carried out the attack with a semiautomatic rifle and also had a knife; he was charged with four counts of felony murder that day, and later faced a broader indictment totaling dozens of counts.

At about 10:20 a.m., Barrow County authorities received alerts of an active shooter at Apalachee High School. Responding officers quickly located the suspect; Gray surrendered and was taken into custody without further gunfire. The school was locked down as victims were triaged and transported.
