Richard Aspinwall, a 39-year-old male, was a dedicated math teacher and a beloved football coach at the school. On that fateful Wednesday morning, the sound of gunshots shattered the normal school day. When banging was heard on the lockers near his classroom, Aspinwall made a split-second decision that would ultimately cost him his life but define him as a hero. Instead of seeking safety with his students, he ran out of his classroom to confront the danger and protect them.
Moments after he went into the hallway, gunshots rang out, and Aspinwall was found lying in the doorway of his classroom, having been fatally wounded. He, along with another teacher and two 14-year-old students, became the victims of a school shooting that day. The alleged shooter was identified as Colt Gray, a 14-year-old student at the school, who was taken into custody.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators arrested not only the teenage suspect but also his father, Colin Gray. The father faces multiple charges, including involuntary manslaughter and second-degree murder, for allegedly providing his son with the AR-15-style rifle used in the attack, despite being aware of his son's disturbing behavior and threats of violence. Colt Gray has been charged as an adult with numerous offenses, including felony murder.
The trial for Colin Gray began in February 2026, bringing to light more details about the events leading up to the tragic day. Prosecutors argued that the father was negligent in allowing his son access to the firearm, while the defense claimed that the son had hidden his plans from his father.
