In the late summer of 2024, the community of Winder, Georgia, was irrevocably altered by a tragedy that unfolded within the walls of Apalachee High School. On the morning of September 4th, Christian Angulo, a 14-year-old male student, was fatally shot, his life cut short in an act of violence that also claimed the lives of another student and two teachers.
The ordinary school day turned to chaos when a student opened fire, leaving a lasting scar on the hearts of many.
Christian, who had just begun his freshman year, was remembered by his family as a sweet and caring individual who was deeply loved. His family had moved to Winder from California in search of a more peaceful life. His sudden and unexpected death left his parents, Ismael and Emma Angulo, and his siblings heartbroken. In the days that followed, the community rallied around the Angulo family and the other victims' families, offering support and sharing in their grief. A funeral mass was held for Christian at St. Matthew Catholic Church, where hundreds of mourners, including family, friends, and classmates, gathered to pay their respects and celebrate his all-too-short life.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of a fellow student, 14-year-old Colt Gray. He was taken into custody at the scene and subsequently charged with four counts of felony murder. Authorities reported that the shooter had concealed the weapon in his backpack and that he surrendered to school resource officers shortly after the shooting began. In connection with the tragic event, the suspect's father was also arrested and faced charges. The incident prompted an outpouring of grief and a renewed conversation about school safety within the Winder community and beyond.
