In the late summer of 2024, the community of Winder, Georgia, was struck by a tragedy that would leave an indelible mark. On September 4th, Mason Schermerhorn, a 14-year-old Black male and a freshman at Apalachee High School, lost his life in a school shooting. Remembered as a sweet and loving soul with a big smile, Mason was a boy who loved his family, Disney World, and playing video games like Kingdom Hearts and Roblox. He had just begun learning to play the trumpet, inspired by his older sister. His family described him as someone who loved everyone, regardless of their background or abilities.
The day of the incident, a 14-year-old student named Colt Gray brought an AR-15-style rifle to the high school concealed in his backpack. After leaving his second-period class, he retrieved the weapon from a bathroom and opened fire in classrooms and hallways. The attack resulted in the deaths of Mason, another 14-year-old student named Christian Angulo, and two teachers, Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53. Nine other people were injured in the shooting. Gray was arrested at the scene and has been charged as an adult with four counts of murder, among other charges.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a series of disturbing warning signs. Prosecutors argued that Colt Gray’s father, Colin Gray, had ignored his son's deteriorating mental state and his obsession with previous mass shooters. Despite these red flags, Colin Gray purchased the rifle for his son as a Christmas gift and provided him with ammunition. In March 2026, a Barrow County jury found Colin Gray guilty on 27 counts, including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, for his role in the mass shooting. He was subsequently sentenced for his part in the tragedy.
In the wake of the devastating loss, Mason's mother, Breanna Schermerhorn, announced her intention to file a $25 million lawsuit against school officials in Barrow and Jackson Counties. The planned lawsuit alleges that systemic negligence and a breakdown in communication and accountability contributed to her son's death. The community continues to mourn the loss of the four victims, with memorials and discussions about school safety serving as a somber reminder of the day that changed their lives forever.
