Overview
On July 1, 1993, 55-year-old Gian Luigi Ferri entered the high-rise at 101 California Street in San Francisco’s Financial District and carried out a mass shooting across multiple floors, most notably inside the law firm Pettit & Martin. He killed eight people that day, wounded several others, and then died by suicide as police closed in. One seriously wounded victim died in 1995 from his injuries, bringing the total death toll tied to the attack to ten (including Ferri). The event remains one of San Francisco’s deadliest mass shootings and helped shape subsequent gun policy debates. The Attack
At approximately 2:57 p.m. on July 1, 1993, Ferri exited an elevator on the 34th floor, donned hearing protection, and began firing. He moved between floors via an internal staircase, targeting conference rooms and offices, including those of Pettit & Martin, before killing himself in a stairwell as police converged. Investigators recovered a rambling four-page, all-caps letter from Ferri listing assorted grievances; no clear motive was ever determined.Weapons and Ammunition
Ferri used two Intratec TEC-DC9 semiautomatic pistols and a .45-caliber M1911-pattern pistol (reported as Norinco/Colt in various accounts). He reportedly loaded a mix of standard rounds and Black Talon hollow-points and attached rapid-fire “Hell-Fire” trigger devices to the TEC-9-type pistols. ...Read MoreVictims
