Kevin Bui and the 2020 Green Valley Ranch Arson Murders

Overview

In the early morning of August 5, 2020, a house fire intentionally set in Denver’s Green Valley Ranch neighborhood killed five members of an extended Senegalese American family. Prosecutors said the ringleader, Kevin Bui—then 16—set the blaze with two friends after wrongly believing the people inside had stolen his phone. In 2024, Bui pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 60-year prison sentence, closing the final chapter of a case that horrified Colorado and the Senegalese diaspora.

The Crime (August 5, 2020)

At approximately 2:30 a.m., the suspects poured gasoline around a home on Truckee Street in Green Valley Ranch and ignited it. The fire spread rapidly, trapping several family members inside; three others survived by jumping from upstairs windows. First responders found five victims who could not escape. Early speculation of a hate crime gave way to a different narrative as investigators uncovered a revenge motive tied to a mislocated phone.

Investigation and Motive

Detectives traced the attack to a “Find My”–style location misread: Bui believed his stolen phone had pinged near the victims’ home and, with accomplices Gavin Seymour and Dillon Siebert, targeted the wrong address. Surveillance, digital records, and subsequent confessions led to their arrests. Authorities emphasized that the victims had no connection to the theft and were entirely innocent. ...Read More
