Djibril Diol, a 29-year-old male of Senegalese descent, was a promising civil engineer whose American dream turned into a nightmare in the early hours of August 5, 2020. He, along with four members of his family, perished in a deliberately set house fire in Denver's Green Valley Ranch neighborhood. The blaze claimed the lives of his wife, 23-year-old Adja Diol; their 22-month-old daughter, Khadija; his 25-year-old sister, Hassan Diol; and her infant daughter, Hawa Baye.
The family was asleep when the fire was set, and while three other occupants of the home managed to escape by jumping from a second-story window, the five victims were trapped and died from smoke inhalation. Their bodies were later found on the first floor near the front door, a testament to their desperate, failed attempt to escape the flames.
The horrific nature of the crime, which wiped out a significant part of a thriving immigrant family, initially raised fears of a hate crime within Denver's Senegalese community. Djibril, known as 'Djiby,' was a Colorado State University graduate who worked as a field engineer and dreamed of one day using his skills to build roads in his native Senegal. He was described as a joyful, hardworking, and incredible person who was deeply devoted to his family. The investigation into the arson was complex, but police quickly determined the fire was intentional and launched a homicide investigation. Investigators released chilling surveillance images of three suspects dressed in dark hoodies and full-face masks who fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan.
In January 2021, a breakthrough in the case led to the arrests of three teenagers: two 16-year-olds, Kevin Bui and Gavin Seymour, and a 15-year-old, Dillon Siebert. The investigation revealed the motive was not a bias-motivated attack but a tragic case of mistaken identity. Kevin Bui, portrayed as the ringleader, had been robbed weeks prior and, using a phone-finding app, mistakenly tracked his stolen iPhone to the Diols' address. Seeking revenge, Bui, along with Seymour and Siebert, targeted the wrong house, leading to the devastating loss of five innocent lives.
The three suspects were charged with dozens of felonies, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and arson. Kevin Bui and Gavin Seymour were charged as adults. Ultimately, all three accepted plea bargains. Dillon Siebert, who was 14 at the time of the fire, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to three years in juvenile detention followed by seven years in a youthful offender system. Gavin Seymour pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. In July 2024, Kevin Bui, the final suspect, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
