In the quiet early morning hours of August 5, 2020, a devastating fire engulfed a home in Denver, Colorado's Green Valley Ranch neighborhood, claiming the lives of five members of a Senegalese family. Among the victims was 25-year-old Hassan Diol, a female who had immigrated to the United States from Senegal. She perished in the blaze alongside her infant daughter, Hawa Beye.
The fire also killed her 29-year-old brother, Djibril Diol, his 23-year-old wife, Adja Diol, and their 22-month-old daughter, Khadija. Three other occupants of the house managed to escape by jumping from the second story.
The investigation into the deadly fire quickly revealed that it was not an accident, but a deliberate act of arson, turning the case into a homicide investigation. For months, the case remained without leads, causing fear within Denver's Senegalese community that the attack may have been a hate crime. Investigators released surveillance images showing three suspects wearing dark hoodies and full-face masks who fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan. A significant break in the case came when police, using a controversial search warrant, obtained information from Google about IP addresses that had searched for the home's address shortly before the fire. This digital trail ultimately led them to identify three teenage suspects.
In January 2021, authorities arrested Kevin Bui, who was 16 at the time of the fire, Gavin Seymour, also 16, and Dillon Siebert, who was 14. The investigation revealed that the arson was a tragic case of mistaken identity and misplaced revenge. Kevin Bui had been robbed of his phone weeks prior and, using an app, had tracked its location to the wrong address, leading him and his friends to target the Diol family's home by mistake. The three teenagers were charged as adults with multiple counts, including first-degree murder and arson.
All three suspects eventually pleaded guilty to various charges. Dillon Siebert, the youngest, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a sentence of three years in juvenile detention followed by seven years in a youthful offender program. Gavin Seymour pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Kevin Bui, identified as the ringleader, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison, bringing a close to the legal proceedings for the tragic and senseless act that took the lives of Hassan Diol and four of her family members.
