In August of 1988, the body of 35-year-old Pamela Montgomery was discovered in an alley in the 1700 block of Locust/Leyden Streets in Denver, Colorado. For decades, her case remained unsolved, one of several cold cases that puzzled investigators. The passage of time, however, did not erase the evidence that would ultimately bring a resolution to the mystery of her death.
Years later, as part of a cold case review project, investigators from the Denver Police Department and the Denver District Attorney's Office identified a potential suspect in Montgomery's murder, as well as three other unsolved homicides from 1979. That suspect was Vincent Groves. Advances in forensic technology allowed for DNA testing, which definitively linked Groves to the murders, including that of Pamela Montgomery.
While the evidence brought certainty to the identity of the person responsible for the deaths of these women, there would be no trial or conviction. Vincent Groves died in prison in 1996, where he was incarcerated on other charges. Law enforcement officials believe Groves may have been one of the most prolific serial murderers in Colorado's history, often preying on vulnerable women. The resolution of the case, though it did not result in a courtroom battle, provided long-awaited answers to the families of his victims.
