In the early hours of July 24, 2021, the life of 38-year-old Taryn Nicole Meyer, a White female, was tragically cut short in a double homicide in Denver, Colorado. The incident unfolded at an apartment located at 4955 East Donald Avenue, a residence known to be a temporary haven for multiple individuals, including those experiencing homelessness.

Meyer, along with 34-year-old Elwood Johnson, had gone to the apartment in an attempt to help a friend reclaim the unit from a man who had reportedly taken it over by force. This man was later identified as 22-year-old Jakeob Voorhis. An altercation ensued, resulting in both Meyer and Johnson sustaining fatal gunshot wounds. Emergency services were called to the scene around 2:30 a.m., and both victims were transported to Denver Health where they succumbed to their injuries.

The investigation into the double murder led Denver police to identify Jakeob Voorhis as the suspect. At the time, Voorhis was already in police custody on a separate menacing charge. Subsequently, he was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Meyer and Johnson. It was reported that Voorhis and the victims were acquainted with each other.

Witnesses at the scene described seeing Voorhis and his girlfriend fleeing the apartment complex after the shooting. One witness recounted seeing Voorhis run outside screaming for help before his girlfriend joined him, picked something up, and they both fled in a vehicle. Voorhis was later arrested and held in the Denver County Jail without bond.
