Karol Ximena Bedoya, a 44-year-old female, was at her home in the Montbello neighborhood of Denver on the evening of February 24, 2023. She was a mother to four children and was watching television on her living room couch with her two-year-old grandson beside her. The quiet evening was shattered when her boyfriend of ten years, Clemente Flores-Hernandez, burst into the residence.
He fired a gun at close range, shooting Bedoya multiple times and ending her life at the scene.
The sound of the gunshots alerted Bedoya's adult son, who was in the basement of the home. As he ran upstairs, he was met by Flores-Hernandez, who was still armed. A physical struggle ensued between the two men. During the altercation, Flores-Hernandez assaulted Bedoya's son, strangling him until he nearly lost consciousness. Following the violent confrontation, Flores-Hernandez fled the scene, but not before abducting the two-year-old grandson who had been on the couch with his grandmother.
Law enforcement was alerted, and a high-speed chase began. Police pursued Flores-Hernandez on Interstate 70. The chase ended near Strasburg, about 30 miles east of Denver, where he was apprehended. The young child was recovered from the vehicle, physically unharmed. Family members later revealed that while Bedoya had been private about her struggles, she had recently confided in them about her unhappiness in the relationship, expressing a desire for Flores-Hernandez to leave her life. Her family described her as a dedicated 'soccer mom' who did everything for her children.
Clemente Flores-Hernandez was arrested and faced multiple charges. He ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree assault. In a plea deal, several other charges, including first-degree murder and kidnapping, were dropped. A judge sentenced him to a total of 60 years in prison, with the sentences for the murder and the assault to be served consecutively, ensuring he would likely spend the remainder of his life behind bars for the violent end he brought to Karol Bedoya's life.
