In the middle of a quiet suburban Denver night on August 5, 2020, a devastating fire engulfed a home, claiming the lives of five members of a Senegalese family, including 6-month-old Hawa Baye. The female infant, along with Djibril Diol, 29, Adja Diol, 23, their 22-month-old daughter Khadija Diol, and Hassan Diol, 25, perished in the blaze that was intentionally set.
Three other occupants of the house managed to escape by jumping from a second-story window.
The ensuing investigation into the fatal fire stretched on for months without any initial leads. Surveillance footage from the scene showed three suspects clad in dark hoodies and full face masks. A breakthrough in the case came when investigators obtained a search warrant for Google IP addresses that had searched for the home's address within 15 days of the fire. This digital trail ultimately led police to identify three suspects: Kevin Bui, Gavin Seymour, and Dillon Siebert, who were arrested approximately five months after the incident.
Prosecutors identified Kevin Bui, a teenager at the time but tried as an adult, as the ringleader of the trio. The motive behind the arson was a misplaced act of revenge. Bui had allegedly been robbed and, using a phone app, mistakenly tracked his stolen iPhone to the victims' residence, believing the people who robbed him lived there. In May 2024, Bui, the last of the three to enter a plea, pleaded guilty. Gavin Seymour, who was 19, was sentenced to 40 years in prison in March after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. Dillon Siebert, 14 at the time of the fire, received a sentence of three years in juvenile detention and seven years in a state prison program for young inmates after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.
