On the warm evening of August 16, 2020, in Denver, Colorado, 30-year-old Jessica Marisela Barraza-Hernandez, a Hispanic female, was sitting in a vehicle with friends. They were in the 600 block of South Federal Boulevard around 10 p.m., intending to pick up another person, when the night was shattered by the sound of gunfire. An altercation had broken out nearby, escalating to the point where shots were fired indiscriminately.
As chaos erupted, those in the car with Jessica ducked for
cover. Despite their efforts to stay safe, a stray bullet found its way to Jessica, striking her. The devastating injury proved to be fatal, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. An employee at Children's Hospital Colorado and a resident of Commerce City, her sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through her community and left her family heartbroken. She was remembered as a vibrant and protective person who brought joy to those around her.
In the immediate aftermath, the Denver Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting. They determined that the altercation that led to the gunfire was unrelated to Jessica or her friends.
