In the spring of 2021, a beloved 41-year-old female special education teacher, Melissa Ann Wright, was tragically killed in Denver, Colorado. Her life was cut short on the evening of Friday, May 28, 2021, when she was shot multiple times in the city's Lowry Field neighborhood. Wright was discovered the following morning and pronounced dead at the scene.
A dedicated and compassionate educator, Wright was employed by the Cherry Creek School District, where she taught math to students with
severe educational disabilities at I-Team Manor. Earlier in the year of her death, she had been recognized for her exceptional work with students, demonstrating her commitment to going above and beyond for their success. Her mother fondly remembered her as someone who 'lived life to the fullest,' balancing hard work and a passion for travel.
The investigation into her death quickly led to a suspect. Late on the Sunday following the discovery of her body, police arrested 49-year-old Eric Cobain. Relatives of Wright confirmed that Cobain was her ex-boyfriend and that the couple had recently ended their relationship. Cobain was subsequently held on suspicion of first-degree murder.
Ultimately, Eric Cobain pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with a domestic violence factual basis. In November 2023, a judge sentenced him to 48 years in prison for the murder of Melissa Wright, bringing a legal conclusion to a case that deeply affected her family, friends, students, and the wider Denver community. Wright is survived by her daughter, who described the time following her mother's death as the 'worst time of my life.'
